Police investigating the death of a baby boy mauled by a dog are to speak to local businesses and neighbours.

Archie-Lee Hirst was killed by the family's pet rottweiler in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, last Friday while spending the Christmas holiday's at his grandparent's home.

"He will always be in our hearts, never to be forgotten - He's my sleeping angel" - Rebecca Hirst

Detective Superintendent Steve Payne of West Yorkshire Police, who is leading the investigation, said: "Obviously the investigation into the circumstances of Archie-Lee's death is still in its early stages.

"The family remain inconsolable and are being supported by relatives and friends, as well as specially trained officers. They do not plan on returning to the house until the New Year.

"The focus of our investigation currently is carrying out house-to-house inquiries, speaking to neighbours and we shall also be speaking to local business owners in the area."

Archie-Lee's mother, Rebecca Hirst, who turned 18 on Saturday, said her "sleeping angel" would always be in her heart.

In a statement, Ms Hirst paid tribute to her 16-year-old sister, who fought in vain to save Archie-Lee from the rottweiler's jaws.

She said: "I'd like to say to Kara we are all so proud of her - she tried.

"She's a hero in my eyes and will be respected for what she did for the rest of her life."

Ms Hirst described Archie-Lee as her "world", adding: "It's so hard for me at this time. We shared so many precious memories in the short while that we had together. He is loved by many.

"He will always be in our hearts, never to be forgotten. He's my sleeping angel."
