Frank Lampard scored for England but Steve McClaren's team suffered a 2-1 defeat against Germany at Wembley.

The Chelsea midfielder struck early on when Micah Richards surged into the Germany penalty area.

"It was great preparation for the games coming up" - Steve McClaren

But Paul Robinson suffered an embarrasing moment when he was caught out by a right wing cross from Bernd Schnieder.

The Tottenham goalkeeper had been anticipating an outswinging cross but the ball arorrowed towards his net and Robinson was forced to punch the ball away as he dived into his own net.

That gifted Kevin Kuranyi a simple tap-in to equalise and Germany left back Christian Pander struck a thunderbolt winner late in the second half on his international debut.

England boss Steve McClaren said: "If we keep creating chances like that we've got to score some - it was a very tough game against a very, very good Germany side."

He added: "It was important to get minutes into players like David Beckham and Michael Owen and it was great preparation for the games coming up."

Meanwhile, Kris Boyd came on as a substitute and scored the only goal as Scotland beat South Africa 1-0 at Hampden Park in a friendly.

Scotland manager Alex McLeish said: "He's now got the tag of 'super-sub'," said McLeish.

"I don't think he'll thank me for that. But he's come off the bench in the last few games and scored a goal.

"People have told me he's better starting games and he's not a great sub, but he certainly made a fantastic contribution.

"You give him a chance - and he'll finish it.

Freddy Eastwood scored on his international debut for Wales in a 1-0 friendly win in Bulgaria.

Wales manager John Toshack said: "It was a really special goal, Freddy knew just what he wanted to do and worked his way into a position to crack it home.

"We have produced several decent performances against sides of late, several 0-0 draws when we have had chances but missed them.

"Now we have got a player up front who knows his business. We have been aware of his goalscoring exploits and have worked hard to make sure he became a Wales international."
