James steers Portsmouth through
England goalkeeper David James saved a penalty to steer Portsmouth through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.
James denied Preston North End an upset by blocking Simon Whaley's spot kick in the 60th minute.
Cruelly for Preston, who are fourth from bottom in the Coca-Cola Championship, it was an own-goal by Darren Carter that sealed victory for the visitors.
The unfortunate midfielder deflected in a Niko Kranjcar corner in injury time.
James produced a string of fine saves that will help cement his position as England manager Fabio Capello's keeper of choice.
The 37-year-old said: "I thought we'd be lucky to get an opportunity to have another game but the Cup's about winning and however you do it, last minute, that's what counts."
