The show aims to offer development in the hope of seeing one young player progress to a professional football career.

A chosen few will move into a special training house where they will undergo a gruelling month-long trial. An expert judging panel alongside celebrity football guests will determine who will stay and go each week as the group are culled down to a final three.

After a final trial match the winning football apprentice will walk off the pitch with a prize package comprised of a season long contract with an Australian league youth team alongside a university scholarship valued at $30,000 (£14,500).

The Irish singer, who is now dating Aussie singer Delta Goodrem, will be hosting the show Down Under later this year.
