US defense analyst 'spied for China'
A US Defense Department analyst has admitted spying for the Chinese, according to the Justice Department.
Gregg William Bergersen pleaded guilty to passing information to an agent working for the Chinese government.
He was charged with conspiracy to disclose national defense information to persons not entitled to receive it following an investigation by Assistant US Attorney for National Security Kenneth Wainstein.
He faces up to 10 years in prison.
Bergersen, a weapons system policy analyst from Alexandria, Virginia, was arrested in February, along with Tai Shen Kuo and Yu Xin Kang, both of New Orleans.
The Justice Department said Bergersen admitted he gave national defense information to Kuo several times and that Kuo had cultivated a friendship with him that included gifts, cash payments and gambling money for Las Vegas trips.
It said Bergersen cautioned Kuo that the information was classified, but he was unaware that Kuo was passing it along to a Chinese government official
Charges of spying are still pending against both Kuo and Kang.
